1. How does the war affect the people of the village? Think of examples relating to the children AND adults. How do they interact with the rambos and the redskins?
The war affects all the villagers in many ways. With the war going on, the villagers have no food that's imported, everyone must rely on food that's naturally grown in bougainville such as coconuts and fish. There are also no medical supplies for when a disease or sickness breaks out. In addition, people cannot leave or enter due to the blockade and that separates families.

Mr. Pip and Bougainville
1. Choose a passage in the first 105 pages that you connected with or felt that it was important to the story as a whole. Post it on your blog and explain why you connected with it or think it is important.
"The book is not there, sir," I said.
If ever there was a time for Mr. Watts to show his fear, thi would have been it.
"Are you sure, Matilda?"
"it is not on the desk, sir."
I feel that this passage is important because the book Great Expectations plays a big role in the story. All the characters in the story are connected with this book, such as the kids, their parents and even the redskins.
2. Where are the themes of story telling and oral tradition apparent in the novel? To whom are they important and why? List and describe as many as you can.
Oral tradition is apparent in the novel when Dolores talks about ancestry to matilda making sure that she knows everybody in the family tree. Another example where oral tradition is shown is when the parents are telling their stories and tales to all the kids. This is important to the parents since this passes down their knowledge and traditions.

Mr. Watts may have invited the children's parents because he is only strong when it comes to teaching Great Expectations. For many of the other questions that the students have, Mr. Watts had trouble answering them. By bringing the children's parents, the kids have a larger variety of topics that the children can learn from. This would benefit the kids more than if Mr. Watts taught alone.
2. Why do you think Matilda says that she will have to choose between Mr. Watts and her mother?
I believe Matilda said she has to make a choice between Mr. Watts and her mother because she has become very obsessed with Pip. Matilda is so "close" to Pip that she considers Pip a part of the family. Her mother thinks otherwise, Matilda's mother doesn't like Matilda being so obsessed with Pip. So eventually, Matilda thinks that if she wants to be with Pip, she'll have to choose Mr. Watts over her own mother, and if she wants to follow her mother, she would have to give up Pip.
3. What does Matilda’s mother mean when she says that Mr. Watts “is the offspring of a shining cuckoo”? Why does she call him “Pop Eye” instead of “Mr. Watts,” as the children do?
Matilda explains that the shining cuckoo goes to lay their eggs and then fly off before the chick is born. When Matilda's mother said that Mr. Watts is the offspring of a shining cuckoo, she means that, he is left here all by himself and had no parents since he is the only white man left. Matilda's mother calls Mr. Watts Pop Eye because she doesn't like Mr. Watts, so this was the amount of respect that she displayed to him, while all the other kids were able to become a little closer with Mr. Watts and actually call him by his real name.

When Mr. Watts said that he hoped his wife might eventually grow into her name, he meant that he had hoped that her wife would start a new life. Mr. Watts said that certain events occured in her past, so he hoped that by getting a new name, she would start a new life.

Oedipus' Wheel of Fate
In King Oedipus, many characters are involved with a series of misfortunes. Most characters did not deserve such misfortunes, especially Oedipus. I feel very sympathetic for him and his situation because the oracle told King Laius and Jocasta that it was predetermined that Oedipus would kill his father. It wasn't for him to decide whether he wanted to kill his father or not, it was just fate. He must have been ashamed and embarrassed to have married his own mother as well, Which was why he was abandoned soon after he was born. That alone is unfortunate for Oedipus. From the day he was born, his life foretold, and since the very beginning, Oedipus had been in fear of the fate he had in store for him and he desperately struggled to try and prevent his fate, but things were out of his control. He was completely helpless which is why I feel sympathetic towards Oedipus.

Greek Tragedy Blog Response
a)What I Know
Based on books and movies I have seen before, tragedy results in a sad ending. I beleive that there may not necessarily have to be a death, but it can be something that doesn't end up going the way the protagonist wants, such as a goal or dream that is left unaccomplished.
b)Greek Tragedy
Greek tragedy revolves around the hero who suffers from misfortune that is not accidental. The misfortune that the hero suffers from is connected to the flaws and actions of the hero. Tragedy may be harsh towards the hero but not all tragedies have a pessimistic ending.
Greek tragedy was performed during the day because if inadequete light source at night. night scenes were identified by the actors and the rest is up to the audience's imagination. The plays were divided and performed in seperate parts. Another characteristic was that there were only 3 actors, but each one played more than 1 character. they used only 3 characters because no more than 3 people talked at a time.
I believe that the difference between reading and watching a greek tragedy is that the less important details will be left out in the performance but the play would probably be more understandable since there will be props, and the characters will perform with emotion that is fitting for the character. In my opinion, it is more advantagous to watch the performance, then read the play since the play will give us the backbone such as the plot, characters and settings and then when we read the play, we'll be given more detail to strengthen the backbone.
